The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Board of Directors announced today during its monthly board meeting that Joe Costello, Senior Deputy Executive Director, Finance & Administration will serve as the agency’s acting executive director beginning October 1 when outgoing Executive Director Stephen E. Schlickman departs the agency.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues at the RTA to continue the momentum established by outgoing Executive Director Steve Schlickman,” Costello said. “As the economy continues to challenge us, and as the expectations of public transportation by the people of the metropolitan region continue to increase, the RTA plans to work harder than ever to ensure we continue our transparency in providing the most effective service possible.”
Costello has been an RTA employee since 1995 and has overseen more than $2.8 billion in new money and refunding bonds. His prudent fiscal management has been credited with the upgrade of the agency’s bond rating to AA and Aa3. During his tenure, the RTA has been a recipient of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Award for 14 consecutive years and the GFOA Award for Distinguished Budget Presentation on its annual budget for 11 consecutive years.
Costello received a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Chicago.
The RTA Board of Directors is continuing its search for a permanent executive director.
