RTA SMART Rider Program

The RTA SMART Rider program teaches transit safety and responsible behavior to our youngest riders. The program began in 1996 as a series of classroom presentations in the Chicago Public Schools emphasizing the principles that SMART Riders are: safe, mannerly, alert, respectful and thoughtful.

A coloring book featuring the Rider Quints and their adventures on public transit was published in 1998. Thousands of copies have been distributed to schools throughout northeastern Illinois. A video companion to the coloring book was produced in 2000. Both the coloring book and the video are available through the RTA.
